From headquarters to the factory floor: How Schneider Electric activates a global workforce with Bonterra Deed

Overview

Unifying giving and volunteering across offices and plants in the U.S. and Canada to drive community impact.

When a workforce spans corporate offices, field teams and manufacturing sites, purpose can be hard to deliver consistently. Schneider Electric, an energy technology leader that electrifies, automates, and digitalizes every industry, business and home, is advancing energy technology to drive impact for customers and communities. This same approach extends to its people, mobilizing employees to contribute to local resilience, skills development, and community impact.

For 60 years, the Schneider Electric North America Foundation has invested in building resilient, electrified communities, empowering youth with energy and technical skills, and empowering employees to drive local community impact. In North America, this mission comes alive through employee giving and volunteering. Since 2021, Schneider Electric has educated more than one million people globally in energy and technical skills, while mobilizing tens of thousands of volunteer days each year.

As the Schneider Electric North America Foundation program scaled, the experience needed to be unified. Tracking lived in spreadsheets, matching gifts and volunteering ran on separate tools, and shop-floor employees often struggled to participate at all. The U.S. and Canada teams needed one platform that could make action simple, make participation measurable, and meet every employee where they are, including those without daily desktop access.

Bonterra Deed became that platform.

Key takeaways

  • Deed mobilized giving and volunteering initiatives at scale by making engagement easy for every employee group, including manufacturing and site-based teams without regular desktop access.
  • By consolidating giving, volunteering, and reporting data into a single, mobile-first platform, Schneider Electric streamlined fragmented tools, reduced manual effort for the Foundation team, and enabled clear, measurable visibility of impact across sites.

The challenge

Activating a shop-floor workforce at scale

Before Deed, Schneider Electric’s community impact story was happening everywhere, but it was tracked in multiple systems and formats. One tool supported matching gifts; another captured volunteering and local engagement. Turning that activity into a clear view meant the North America Foundation team spent considerable time reconciling spreadsheets and consolidating reports across regions. Schneider Electric needed a single, easy way to capture donations and volunteer hours in both countries; one that didn’t assume employees had time at a computer to navigate portals, passwords, or complex steps.

Engaging shop-floor and site-based employees wasn’t a “nice to have”; it was essential to scale impact. For many of them, participation had to fit into real life: between shifts, on a break, or at an on-site volunteer event. The experience needed to be mobile-first, intuitive, and fast.

The solution

Bonterra Deed: Designed for accessibility and simplicity

Deed changed the story. Schneider Electric chose this platform built around accessibility:
a mobile-first experience that works for employees in offices, plants, and everywhere in between.

Deed makes it easy for employees to find opportunities across the U.S. and Canada. Previously, they had to search for opportunities independently; now, they can explore events and activities in one place and turning access into action to drive community impact.

The ease of the tool has been a game changer. Platform transitions often come with resistance, but we saw virtually no friction; employees were able to hit the ground running.

Outcomes

The impact: Community engagement and measurable results

Deed is Schneider Electric’s central hub for employee engagement across the U.S. and Canada—a single place where employees can discover opportunities, act, and have their impact measured.

More than a platform, Deed is a strategic enabler. It helps Schneider Electric advance its mission of empowering all to make the most of energy and resources by mobilizing employees to contribute to the energy transition in their communities through volunteering, donations, fundraisers, and rapid response campaigns.

This impact is evident in moments that matter. During wildfire relief efforts in California and Manitoba, employees quickly mobilized through Deed to raise funds with automatic matching and tracking. Also, as the Official Sustainability Partner of the Boston Marathon, Schneider Electric activated employee-led fundraising campaigns in support of sustainability-focused initiatives tied to the race, demonstrating how Deed connects Schneider Electric’s people, purpose, and its role in advancing sustainability beyond the company’s core business.

Looking ahead: Advancing sustainability through local action

The next chapter is about scale. Schneider Electric aims to grow global and local volunteering engagement to 30 percent of its employee base by 2030. Achieving this ambition is not just about participation; it’s about activating Schneider Electric’s workforce as a powerful lever for both business and societal impact, supporting the broader energy transition through employee action. Those moments of action—on the factory floor, in the field, and within local communities—are where Schneider Electric’s purpose comes to life. By continuing to activate manufacturing and site-based teams, pairing targeted communications with locally relevant opportunities, and making it easy to sustain momentum, the company is embedding engagement into how it operates and delivers value.

Deed is a critical enabler of this scale. By providing a unified, mobile-first platform, it empowers employees to translate intent into measurable impact, connecting individual actions to collective outcomes across ecosystems and communities. Through capabilities such as:

  • Real-time performance reporting
  • Built-in communication tools
  • Mobile accessibility across all employee populations
  • Gamification features such as badges and leaderboards

Deed helps remove barriers to participation while amplifying the reach and consistency of engagement efforts. What once relied on fragmented tools and manual coordination is now a seamless experience that extends from headquarters to the factory floor—enabling Schneider Electric to scale workforce engagement as a meaningful driver of community impact and progress toward the energy transition.
