Indiana floods and the Philippines monsoon: A growing list of organizations providing emergency relief 

Two water-related natural disasters are unfolding at once, half a world apart, and both are disproportionally impacting households with limited support and fewer resources than most: renters, seniors, rural communities, displaced workers, and low-income families. 

In Indiana, severe storms and a derecho that began on August 11 pushed the White River past a 113-year-old record crest in Hamilton County, with states of emergency in Carmel, Fishers, and Noblesville. Seven deaths are confirmed across Delaware, Jennings, Lake, Porter, LaPorte, and Henry counties. Noblesville reports more than 550 residential units impacted; Carmel reports more than 215 properties hit; Fishers has seen evacuations. Governor Mike Braun declared a statewide disaster emergency, and a federal disaster declaration was approved on August 16. As the water moves into the Ohio Valley, recovery will be measured in weeks, not days. 

In the Philippines, an enhanced southwest monsoon — intensified by Tropical Cyclones Luis and Maymay — has triggered flooding and landslides across Luzon and Metro Manila since early August. More than 27 people have been reported dead, including 16 in a single landslide in Baguio City. An estimated 3.7 million people are affected, and more than 15,000 families are sheltering in evacuation centers across ten regions. PAGASA, the national weather agency, forecasts two more typhoons before the end of August.
